It’s the Season to Be Bear Aware!
With bear activity on the rise, we’re taking proactive steps to keep our community safe. We’ll be brush cutting along the pathway between Caribou Crescent and Marten Avenue to improve visibility and reduce the chances of unexpected encounters with our hungry friends.
Here are some essential bear awareness tips:
1. **Stay Alert:** Make noise while walking to avoid surprising bears. Bears tend to avoid human contact if they hear you coming.
2. **Travel in Groups:** Bears are less likely to approach groups of people. If possible, walk with others.
3. **Proper Food Storage:** Keep food and scented items secured in bear-proof containers or inside your vehicle.
4. **Avoid Bear Habitats:** Steer clear of areas with dense vegetation, as these are popular spots for bears searching for food.
If You Encounter a Bear:
1. **Stay Calm:** Do not run. Bears may chase fleeing animals.
2. **Speak Softly:** Talk to the bear in a calm, assertive voice to let it know you’re human.
3. **Back Away Slowly:** Give the bear plenty of space and try to move away without turning your back.
4. **If the Bear Charges:** Stand your ground. Bears often bluff charge and will veer away if you don’t retreat.
By following these tips and staying vigilant, we can ensure a safer environment for both residents and our local wildlife. Thank you for your cooperation and understanding!
