Mayor Watson

March was a busy month for Council and Administration. The majority of the month was taken up by the Annual financial audit of the Town.

The Town auditor spent two weeks in Norman Wells working alongside staff and Council to review all of the 2016 financials. Before the Auditor left, he met with Council and provided us with the first draft of his Audit findings. Once the final audit findings have been provided to the Town, we will ensure that they are added to our website for all to view.

Councils’ meeting with the auditor was very positive. The Town has a healthy financial status with a good balance of revenue over expenses. This of course does not mean that there are not places for improvement. As always, Council and Administration are trying to do their best to ensure that this Town is run as effectively and efficiently as possible. There were some recommendations by the Auditor which Council is looking into and we will be sure to share all of that information with you as discussions ensure and decisions are worked out. These audits, although stressful at times, are an important part of ensuring the Town is doing its very best to be there for you, its’ citizens and I was very pleased with all of the hard work that everyone involved put in and am looking forward to being able to share the full audit with you once we receive the final version.

At the same time as the audit was happening, Town Administration was also working hard on preparing multiple Requests for Proposals (RFPs) for the Town. This summer is going to be very busy for the Town with multiple construction projects in the works. To assist with all of the work, the Town sent out three Requests for Proposals; one for Engineering Consulting Services, one for Municipal Project management and one for Municipal Engineering Services. All three of these RFPs have now closed and we are currently in the evaluation process. I encourage you to keep your eye out for future RFPs from the Town. Any new RFP will be posted on our website at http://normanwells.com/town-hall/requests-proposals .

Unfortunately, March did not go by with only positive news. As you all know, on March 3rd, shortly before Noon, a fire broke out at the warehouse for Manitoulin Transport. Although this was a horrible situation that no one would have wished to have happen in our Town, the events of that day showed the community spirit and willingness to help out others that this Town has.

Through the hard work, dedication and cooperation of the Fire Department, RCMP, Manitoulin Staff, Town Staff and members of the Community, the fire was able to be contained and extinguished by late afternoon and I am happy to say that there were no injuries or fatalities from this fire. We have heard that Manitoulin is working on plans to rebuild their warehouse and in the meantime it is business as normal.

Back on a happier note, I wanted to mention that plans for the annual Spring Fling are underway. I encourage all of you to keep your eyes out for information on the specific details for this event that will be announced in the coming days. There is no better way to say goodbye to our long cold winter than enjoying time together having fun at Spring Fling!
